Mirek Kemel

Folk singer-songwriter Mirek Kemel returns to Barrák after a year. Mirek Kemel is known to a broad cultural audience primarily as an outstanding cartoonist who has carried on the tradition of philosophical and political cartoons pioneered by Renčín and Jiránek. However, a few years ago he also made a name for himself as a folk singer-songwriter, gathering a group of excellent accompanying musicians around him. In his lyrics, Kemel manages to be expressive and precise without resorting to clichés or banalities. His poetics follow in the footsteps of refined Czech poetry and the finest songwriting; Kemel works with clear yet poetic metaphors and creates an almost spellbinding atmosphere. Moreover, he benefits from a natural, very pleasant narrative voice—and the musical aspect of his songs feels familiar and accessible, yet never banal.
