A vast grainfield, and a story that hits you right in the heart. De Graanrepubliek is an epic music theater production about the fierce struggle between farmhands and gentleman farmers — a bitter class struggle whose consequences are still felt in Groningen today.

In the Oldambt region of Groningen, activist father Ludo becomes increasingly entangled in the resistance against the powerful gentleman farmers. Meanwhile, mother Jantje desperately tries to hold her family together, while daughter Aletta longs for freedom and love — which she finds with the very gentleman farmers exploiting her family. Son Koert becomes the first victim of this power struggle.

De Graanrepubliek is a large-scale outdoor music theater production, produced by Zummerbühne. Based on the book of the same name by Frank Westerman, with text and direction by Tom de Ket (known for, among others, Het Pauperparadijs and De Verleiders).
